PHC Corporation

TOKYO, February 22, 2021 - PHC Corporation (headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, President: Kyoji Morimoto, hereafter PHC), today announced signing of a business transfer contract with Xirapha Karte System Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Fukuoka City, Fukuoka, President: Taichi Yamaguchi, hereafter Xirapha) to acquire its cloud-based electronic medical record (EMR)*1 business.

Xirapha has developed the Xirapha Karte cloud-based EMR system for clinics in Japan. After launching its cloud-based EMR in Japan in 2016, the company steadily built up its customer base and has achieved the highest number of installations*2 for cloud-based EMR systems that link to the Standard Japan Medical Receipt Software provided by the Japan Medical Association ORCA Management Association Co., Ltd.

With the Japanese government promoting the digitization of medical information, steady expansion is expected for the country’s medical ICT market. In particular, future growth of cloud-based EMR systems is anticipated due to its significant contributions to reducing maintenance operations, lowering costs, and improving convenience during care visits.

PHC is a Japanese subsidiary of PHC Holdings Corporation, a healthcare company that develops, manufactures, sells, and services solutions across diabetes management, life sciences and diagnostics globally, as well as providing healthcare services in Japan. By adding Xirapha’s cloud-based EMR solution to PHC’s Healthcare IT portfolio consisting mainly of on-premise software systems, the company will strengthen its business foundation in healthcare IT, enabling it to respond to the evolving needs of healthcare professionals. Future business strategies for the two companies will be discussed, with the aim to provide more comprehensive and flexible solutions. Moreover, by combining Xirapha’s capabilities in cloud-based EMR technology with PHC’s expertise and heritage in medical information systems, it will enable accelerated development of services that offer higher added-value for healthcare professionals, leading to further growth in the Healthcare IT business in Japan.

Takayuki Otsuka, Corporate Officer and co-head of the Healthcare Services Domain of PHC Holdings Corporation says, “I’m very happy that we signed an agreement today with Xirapha for the acquisition of their cloud-based EMR business. Since launching Japan’s first medical-receipt computer in 1972, PHC Corporation has been the leading provider of medical IT products in the field of medical information systems, using its accumulated experience and specialist expertise. With this business acquisition, we expect to promptly expand our solutions that are designed to further streamline workflow for healthcare professionals and provide better healthcare for patients. We strongly believe that we can make the best use of the technology and management resources of these two companies, contributing to better healthcare by addressing the needs of our customers.”

The acquisition is scheduled to be completed on April 1, 2021 following necessary procedures and successful completion of closing requirements.
